Create Non Body Image Goals
Focusing on body image goals alone could lead to grave disappointment. Having a goal to lose 30lbs is not a bad idea, but losing 30lbs being your main focus is. There is a possibility that even after working out and eating right for 2 weeks straight, you don’t lose a pound. This is not to say that change is not happening. You are shedding fat while gaining muscle. Muscle being more dense than fat will cause you to weigh the same as your body composition is changing. Your tight jeans becoming loose, having to tighten your belt, having longer endurace bursts and being more energetic all mean that change is happening. Yet standing on the scale and seeing the same number could cause you to become disappointed and give up all together.
The number on the scale is not the be all end all when it comes to being fit. Women around my age are prone to developing Osteoporosis which is a disease of weak, fragile bones. Resistance training not only strengthens the muscles around the bones but also strengthens the actual bone. I lift to ward off this disease that can make the life of an older woman terrible as once you break a hip life is all downhill! Do you want to climb a flight of stairs without being winded, complete a mile run at a faster pace, beat diabetes, learn to swim, heighten your strength or fight fatigue? These are all non-body image goals. Yet while working within a lifestyle change to reach these goals you will start to look and feel better. It’s a win win!
